With the silly season well and truly upon us and the New Year fast approaching, we all know how easy it is for Friday night festivities to get out of hand. If you’ve had a few too many at the office Christmas party and are feeling worse for wear the morning after, here are some of my favourite hangover hacks to ensure that the festive season doesn’t get the better of you this year. Or you might like to try my favourite antioxidant-filled berry smoothie to help with hangovers, just like this!

Top Hangover Hacks

#1 Drink plenty of water (ideally before your big night!)

The more alcohol we drink, the more we need to head to the bathroom, which contributes to our desperate need for water the next day. Don’t even get me started on that thumping headache! If you’ve forgotten, or simply chosen to skip that glass of water between each alcoholic beverage, then make sure you increase your water intake the day after, as part of your hangover recovery.

A handy tip I learnt from the 28 nutrition team is that adding a teaspoon of sea or Himalayan salt to your water bottle will help to naturally replace the electrolytes you have lost.

#2 Refuel with breakfast

I get it, the glowing sign of the golden arches is virtually calling your name on a sorry Sunday. Do your best to resist the temptation to hit the Maccas drive-through or go wild on Uber eats. You can spend an easy five minutes in the kitchen instead. If you are cooking at home then my 28 Classic BLT hits the spot every time.

But, let’s face it, you might not have the strength to dust off the apron so if you do head down to your local cafe then get yourself some bacon and eggs with a side of greens and healthy fats like spinach and avocado.

#3 Get outdoors

Try to resist the temptation to spend the day on the couch, binge-watching Netflix. Get some fresh air instead. Even just a short stroll outside will help get your blood pumping, help your body rid itself of toxins and release those feel-good endorphins you might desperately need.

Take it a step further if you can and get into the ocean. There’s something about saltwater that always seems to do the trick. That said, there are some days where you can hardly muster up the energy to move an inch, so depending on just how flat you’re feeling, the best thing could be to just sleep it off.

#4 Have an early night

When we have too many drinks, our sleep suffers. Chances are your sleep cycle has been seriously disrupted so get up, have a shower, eat a quality breakfast, get some fresh air and then have an early night. This will avoid the whole weekend being a write-off or you having grumpy Mondayitis. It’s also your best bet to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the new day.
