When it comes to weight loss and body transformation, we are all familiar with the BMI calculator. With so many BMI theories, opinions, calculators, graphs & charts available to us, I understand it can be overwhelming!
For those who may not have heard of the BMI, I am here to give you an insight into what it stands for.
The BMI (Body Mass Index), is a number that is often used by health professionals as a general measure of body weight to assess health risks. It was devised a long time ago and although still considered to be a useful tool, it is by no means a comprehensive measure of health.
When finding out your BMI, a BMI calculator will divide your body weight, in kilograms, by your height, in metres squared. With a scale ranging from underweight to morbidly obese, a BMI calculator will place you in a category depending on your current number.
My approach is that if you are curious, by all means have a look at your BMI, or your weight on the scales. However we must understand that when it comes to tracking our fitness journey, these numbers are not the most reliable indicator of success.
A BMI calculator is not a weight loss calculator. For example, it doesn’t take into account factors such as waist circumference, age, ethnicity, gender, body composition or the fact that we are all different shapes and sizes. A BMI can't distinguish between fat and muscle, which tends to be heavier and can tip more toned individuals into overweight status, even if their fat levels are low.
With daily fluctuations and varying health conditions, a BMI calculator can be used as a guide but only that - a guide.
