We all know building up the motivation to exercise when the cold hits can be difficult! The days are shorter and it’s easy to want to just turn on the tv and curl up on your sofa. But did you know that exercising during the winter months has an amazing impact on not only your physical wellbeing, but your mental health too?

If you’re looking for some motivation for your next winter workout, keep on reading.

Fights off sickness

Staying active during the colder months gives a natural boost to your immune system! Getting your blood pumping helps your immune cells travel quickly around your body so they can easily fight off any infections. However, consistency is key as this benefit only lasts a few hours!

Daily dose of the sunshine vitamin

Whether it’s taking your dog for a walk in the park or going for a morning jog – getting outside for a few minutes a day does wonders for your mental health. You’ll get your daily dose of Vitamin D (from the sun), which helps look after your skin, immune system and your overall well being.

Helps keep you warm and happy

We tend to feel extra cold and sluggish in the winter because our blood isn’t circulating as frequently as during the hotter months. When you workout, what happens? We tend to get hot! This natural rise in your temperature has a soothing, calming effect on your body like taking a nice long soak in a bathtub. You’ll finish your workouts feeling more relaxed, good about yourself and have a better sleep too.

A breath of fresh air

Exercising can also give us a chance to step outside and enjoy the crisp, fresh air. A big reason for the rise in sickness during the colder months is breathing in recycled air from heating (especially when you have sick ones at home!). The next time you step outside, take a deep breath in to give your lungs a mini-detox!

Keep extra winter kilos at bay

It’s all about building a healthy habit! If we maintain the healthy habit of exercising throughout winter, you won’t have to worry about a few extra kilos at the end of the cold season. Of course, don’t forget to indulge a little here and there because you’re still human!
